Something my Dad taught me
Tuesday, 06 November 2007
Have you ever noticed that when someone is angry that no matter what you say or do, sometimes you just can't get through to them? Have you ever noticed that when someone is angry that no matter what you say or do, sometimes you just can't get through to them? The best advice I have ever been given from my father beyond the "Guard your heart" phrase he repeated time and time again is to handle anger with a gentle answer. Since I've worked in a place where it was my job to handle the unpleasant and unsatisfied customers, I decided to give it a shot. Low and behold, when I was approached that day with an extremely heated complaint, it was extinguished with a soft and approachable tone. I carefully and calmly explained my side of the situation after hearing the man out. It was as if a candle was blown out. He even bowed his head low as if in slight embarrassment over his enraged words just moments before I even opened my mouth.

It is amazing how a dash of self-control and gentleness can achieve so much. Our natural reaction is to stand our ground and fight back. However, maybe fighting back doesn't need to be so bold and obvious.

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Proverbs 15:1
