The Green Means Go Event
If you’ve ever been to a party or event in your life that made you feel guilty afterwards for the amount of waste and decadence that went into it, well, I’m here to tell you the Green Means Go event held in mid April in Beverly Hills just about made up for all those put together!
What began as a beautiful day in spring at one of the more posh places in Southern California soon turned into perhaps the most enlightening, eye-opening, earth-friendly events ever. Produced by an organization called Friends in High Places, their passion for trumpeting a “Green Agenda” was definitely on display as various products and services were there to pamper – and teach us a thing or two about the planet – around each and every corner.
Our first order of business was to sign up for facials and massages at
the Tola Malibu Spa booth. While waiting, we scampered down a small
flight of stairs and found Debbie, owner and designer of Dye 4 Gething.
The only thing possibly more amazing than her made-to-fit dresses,
which she creates from items like recycled placemats and doilies, was
Debbie Gething herself. Oh, and she also makes lingerie!

Moving on, we then hit up the Shaklee Organic Household Products booth,
where they have everything – and I do mean everything – to help make
your home a clean, beautiful living space without damaging our bigger
home, Earth. We found out they have recycled over one million pounds of
cardboard and planted over six hundred thousand trees since inception.
Think about that while scouring your stove or cleaning the scum off
your shower walls while using their products.

We then went to look at a line of eco-friendly home furnishings from
Cisco Home. This furniture was all ultra-stylish and fun and, best of
all, non-toxic and hand-made in South Central LA. Our favorites had to
be the coffee tables made from recycled wrought iron and, of all
things, tree stumps, which were auctioned off at then end of the
three-day event.

After that, it was time for some chocolate. And what else, but green
M&Ms? Not only were we given these cute little tins of green
grass-colored M&Ms, but we also learned that the Mars Snack Food
Company is helping to employ the parents of low-income families in a
northern area of Mexico City (fashioning handbags and such from
recycled candy wrappers) AND giving a portion of some of their sales to
the Central Park Conservancy in New York to help restore and preserve
that park.

When our dessert was over, we visited with Mathilde of Lady Muse. She’s
a lovely French woman who makes these amazing coats with a little
booklet attached to them (printed on tree-free paper with soy ink, of
course) that tells you the story of how it’s your time to reclaim
yourself and live up to your true potential. Now that’s what I call
dressing for YOUR success!

We must have been in the midst of the fashion designers, because up
next was Sledge Clothing. If you don’t know Sledge, than you must not
be paying any attention at all to what the likes of Beyonce’ and Pam
Anderson have been tooling around in lately. They make a really comfy,
casual line of sweats, tees, and tanks with edgy, tribal and
rock-inspired logos and graphics.

Then…came…M…the Movement. No, seriously. “M…the Movement” is his name
and the overall appreciation of beauty and art, film, music is his
game. And boy does he play it well, and to his own beat. His 100%
organic line of clothing will soon be on display at his own store,
Envi. Be sure to check it out…and be sure to feel “moved.”

Finally, it was time to get our spa treatments! Back upstairs to Tola
Spa we went, where I received an amazing facial treatment (and my first
one ever, mind you). The cool part was, we didn’t feel like a number in
a line; Tola had us fill out a short questionnaire first to determine
the correct essentials oils and products to use on us. Trust me, the
pampering just got better and better – I would tell you more about it,
but simply remembering the cushy robe I was in and the heating pad I
was lying on makes me feel more like drifting off like a cloud…

Wait, where was I? Oh yes, back at the house! After Tola, it was time
for a really butt-kickin’ yoga session with Rochelle Balin. She’s been
acting and teaching yoga to the masses (everyone from celebrities to
kids in juvenile detention centers) on and off for 40 years. And trust
me, she knows what she’s doing – she must, because within a short time
she actually had me touching my nose to my toes.

Maya Volk was next with her Hyperbaric Oxygen Tank. The idea of getting
pure oxygen to the head was kind of scary but Rooco G went for it of
course.

I was deserving of a drink after that, so we strolled on over to Veev
Vodka and has ourselves some organic vodka drinks and were given
bracelets made from the pits of the acai berries. Acai is the hip new
“super food” of the moment and it packs an antioxidant punch. The good
folks at Veev donate one dollar from every bottle sold to help protect
and replenish the Amazon rainforest. If you’re going to drink, why not
make it good for you and good for the environment?

More people- and earth-friendly products were given to us by
Organoderm, makers of organic, natural, bio-active products such as Day
Sun protector moisturizing face lotions. The products are great and
they also, as a company, really push for the recycling of their
materials, which is always a good thing.

We next had the pleasure of meeting Troy Casey, his beautiful wife and
his new baby. Troy is simply a fountain of youth, and I’m guessing most
of this youth is from Amazon Herb Company products that he sells. They
support the sustainability of rainforests, help reduce stress, cleanse,
detox, recover and rebuild, boost immunity, enhance energy and
productivity, and retain overall total health.

Outside on the balcony was the Green Society Juice Bar, where they were
cutting open real coconuts and serving them with the juice inside. Then
came organic chocolate balls with goji berries and lots of other
wonderfully healthy ingredients.

Last, but certainly not least, we spoke to Sarah with Chae Organics.
She sells an organic skin care line that tries to prevent breast
cancer, depression, obesity, birth defects and heart disease all with
the power of oxygen and the belief that better skin can be had without
invasive cosmetic surgery. In fact, 1% of net profits go to the
American Cancer Society.

Solar City was there to teach us everything about solar power and how to live off the grid. The really had a lot of ideas on how to energizing our communities with clean affordable solar power and they can do it all for you, from design and installation through ongoing system monitoring in the most affordable ways. If you're ready to go solar, Solar City is ready to help.
We said our many good-byes and gathered our goody bags and headed out
the door into the setting sun, relaxed, rejuvenated, educated – and
perhaps, most important – smiling. We knew that there would be many
wonderful days like this in the future, with more and more events
planned by truly amazing people gathering companies, designers, and
producers of products who not only have an eye on profits but also on a
greener tomorrow.
